Nature Route: Iceland's South Coast

A driving route where the weather, not the itinerary, decides the day. Built with buffer time on purpose.

Waterfall in the green volcanic landscape of southern Iceland

The south coast is the most straightforward part of Iceland to drive, which is exactly why it is busy. The route below spreads the well known stops across five days instead of squeezing them into two.

Winter and summer are effectively different trips. In winter, cut one stop and add daylight planning to every driving leg.

Suggested sequence

Day 1

Reykjavik

Arrive, collect the car in the city rather than at the airport if your flight lands late, and keep the first day short. The city itself takes half a day.

Day 2

Golden Circle to Hella

Thingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss, then east. Three stops in a day is plenty when each involves parking, walking and weather.

Day 3

Waterfalls and Vik

Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss in the morning, black sand beach in the afternoon, overnight in or near Vik.

Day 4

Glacier lagoon

The longest driving day. Jokulsarlon and the diamond beach, then back west or overnight further east if you booked ahead.

Day 5

Return

Drive back with a buffer of at least three hours before your flight. This buffer is not optional between November and March.

Mountain range under dramatic clouds
Distances are short on paper and long in wind and rain.

Transportation options

  • Rental car with full insurance including gravel and sand cover
  • F roads require a 4x4 and are closed most of the year, they are not part of this route
  • Fuel stations thin out east of Vik, fill up when you can
  • Check road and weather services every morning before leaving
Empty road curving through open landscape
Driving is the activity, not the gap between activities.

Planning notes

  • Book accommodation early, the south coast has limited beds and prices move fast.
  • Northern lights are a possibility, never a plan. Do not build the trip around them.
  • Food is expensive, a supermarket stop in Reykjavik saves a surprising amount.
  • Many hotels are outside towns, so dinner needs to be sorted before 8pm.

What to know before going

  • Waterproof outer layers matter more than warm layers
  • Drone rules are strict at popular sites
  • Never stop on the road itself for photos, use marked pull ins
Coastal cliffs and rough sea
Coastal stops need respect. Sneaker waves are a genuine hazard.

General trip structure

Keep one flexible half day per three days of travel. It absorbs delays, bad weather and the day somebody simply needs to sleep. A route without slack is not a plan, it is a schedule, and schedules break on holiday.
