Multi-City / 7 days

7-Day Multi-City Route: Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka

The classic first Japan route, structured so the rail pass math and the luggage logistics both work.

Seven days in Japan is enough for three bases if you move on the right days and use luggage forwarding. It is not enough to add Hiroshima or Hokkaido without the trip turning into a train schedule.

The route below assumes arrival at Narita or Haneda and departure from Kansai, which avoids one backtracking leg. If you must fly in and out of Tokyo, reverse the last two days.

Suggested sequence

Days 1-3

Tokyo

Base in Shinjuku or around Tokyo Station. One district per day: Shibuya and Harajuku, then Asakusa and Ueno, then Shimokitazawa or Yanaka for a slower afternoon. Jet lag hits on day two more than day one, so keep that day flexible.

Days 4-5

Kyoto

Morning shinkansen. Temples before 9am, gardens in the afternoon, and one evening in Gion. Use buses less than you think, the subway plus walking covers most of the east side.

Days 6-7

Osaka

Half an hour by local rapid train. Osaka is food, night streets and a much less formal atmosphere. Kansai airport is a straightforward departure from here.

Kyoto rewards early starts more than any other stop on this route.

Transportation options

  • Shinkansen Tokyo to Kyoto: about 2 hours 15 minutes
  • Kyoto to Osaka: 15 to 30 minutes depending on service
  • IC card such as Suica or ICOCA for all local transit
  • Luggage forwarding between hotels for around 2000 yen per bag, worth every yen
High speed train at a Japanese station platform
Shinkansen legs are short, the transfers inside stations are not.

Planning notes

  • The nationwide rail pass rarely pays for itself on a three city route, check the point to point fares first.
  • Hotel rooms are small. If you have large suitcases, pay for the larger room type.
  • Cash is still needed for small restaurants and shrines.
  • Cherry blossom and autumn colour weeks need bookings months ahead.

What to know before going

  • Install the transit app before landing, station maps are complex
  • Carry a small bag for rubbish, public bins are rare
  • Tattoo policies still apply at some onsen

Osaka is the eating stop. Plan lighter days around it.

General trip structure

Keep one flexible half day per three days of travel. It absorbs delays, bad weather and the day somebody simply needs to sleep. A route without slack is not a plan, it is a schedule, and schedules break on holiday.
