Couples Route: Norwegian Fjords In Six Days

Trains, ferries and one long slow day where the transport is the point of the trip.

Road winding through Norwegian fjord scenery

Norway is expensive, and the usual reaction is to move fast to see more. That is the wrong instinct here. Six days with three bases and long transport legs gives a much better trip than nine stops in the same time.

This route can be done entirely on public transport, which removes the parking and ferry booking problems that come with a car.

Suggested sequence

Days 1-2

Bergen

Wharf, funicular, fish market and one rainy day contingency, because Bergen is one of the wettest cities in Europe. Use it as the arrival and supply stop.

Days 3-4

Flam and the railway

The scenic railway and a fjord cruise. Book the train seats in advance in summer. Overnight in Flam or Aurland rather than returning the same day.

Days 5-6

Balestrand and return

Express boat along the Sognefjord, a night in a quiet village, then back to Bergen. This is the part most itineraries cut, and it is the best part.

Mountain lake surrounded by steep slopes
The scenery does not need an activity attached to it.

Transportation options

  • Bergen railway and the Flam line, reserved seats recommended
  • Express boats and car ferries, timetables thin out sharply in winter
  • Buses connect the smaller villages, but often only twice a day
  • Airport bus in Bergen is straightforward and frequent
Snow capped mountains above a valley
Weather changes fast, plan indoor fallbacks for one day in three.

Planning notes

  • Shoulder season, May and September, gives good light and fewer people.
  • Alcohol and restaurant prices are high, hotel breakfast is usually worth including.
  • Many small hotels close between October and April.
  • Cash is essentially unused, cards work everywhere.

What to know before going

  • Layers plus a waterproof shell, regardless of the forecast
  • Motion sickness tablets for the fjord boats if you are sensitive
  • Download timetables, mobile coverage drops in the valleys
Quiet waterside village with wooden houses
Small villages are where this route actually slows down.

General trip structure

Keep one flexible half day per three days of travel. It absorbs delays, bad weather and the day somebody simply needs to sleep. A route without slack is not a plan, it is a schedule, and schedules break on holiday.
