Cultural Route: Rome, Florence, Venice

The classic Italian triangle done at a pace where you actually remember what you saw.

Historic Roman architecture in warm afternoon light

Eight days across three cities means roughly two and a half days each once travel is subtracted. That is enough for the essential sites plus one neighbourhood you were not planning to like.

Rail links between these cities are fast and frequent, so the mistake is not transport, it is booking too many museums.

Suggested sequence

Days 1-3

Rome

Ancient Rome one day, Vatican one day, and one day with nothing booked for Trastevere and the smaller churches. Timed entries for the Colosseum and the Vatican are essential.

Days 4-5

Florence

Fast train, under two hours. Uffizi or Accademia, not both on the same day. Climb one tower and pick the Duomo dome only if you handle stairs well.

Days 6-8

Venice

Two hours by rail. Stay at least two nights so you get the early morning and late evening city. Add Murano or Burano only on the full day.

Venice is best at either end of the day, not in the middle.

Transportation options

  • Rome to Florence: high speed rail, about 1 hour 35 minutes
  • Florence to Venice: about 2 hours 10 minutes
  • In Venice, vaporetto passes are worth it from 48 hours upward
  • No car anywhere on this route, it is an obstacle in all three cities

A Tuscan day trip is optional, not compulsory.

Planning notes

  • Book major museum entries three to four weeks ahead in high season.
  • Sunday and Monday closures vary by city, check each one.
  • Dress rules apply at religious sites, shoulders and knees covered.
  • Venice day tax and booking rules change periodically, verify before travel.

What to know before going

  • Validate regional train tickets, high speed ones are seat assigned
  • Restaurants near main sights are the worst value in Italy
  • Carry a refillable bottle, public fountains are drinkable in Rome

Lunch is the main meal in most of the country. Use it.

General trip structure

Keep one flexible half day per three days of travel. It absorbs delays, bad weather and the day somebody simply needs to sleep. A route without slack is not a plan, it is a schedule, and schedules break on holiday.
