When To Book Flights And Accommodation

There is no magic day of the week. There are useful booking windows.

Realistic booking windows

Short haul leisure flights are generally cheapest one to three months out. Long haul sits closer to two to five months. Peak season, holidays and events all shift this earlier, sometimes considerably.

The day of the week you book has a negligible effect. The day you fly has a large one: midweek departures are consistently cheaper than Friday and Sunday.

Flexibility is the real discount

Being flexible by two days, or by nearby airport, typically saves more than any booking tactic. Use the calendar view rather than a fixed date search, and check whether an open jaw routing is cheaper than a return.

Accommodation runs the other way

Hotels frequently offer free cancellation. Book early to secure the location you want, then re check the price a month out and rebook if it has fallen. That is a genuine advantage that flights do not offer.

Do not wait for a crash

Last minute bargains are largely a myth for popular routes in season. Prices rise inside three weeks in almost all cases. Book when the price is reasonable and stop watching it.
