How To Budget A Trip Realistically

Build the number from daily costs upward, not from the flight price outward.

Four buckets

Transport to and from the destination. Accommodation per night. Daily spend, which covers food, local transport and entry fees. And a contingency of ten to fifteen per cent that you should expect to use.

Most budgets fail because the third bucket is guessed. Estimate it per day with actual numbers for the destination, then multiply.

Daily spend, roughly

Western Europe runs seventy to a hundred and twenty euros per person per day for a comfortable but not extravagant trip, excluding accommodation. Southeast Asia is a third of that. Japan sits closer to Europe than people expect for food, and lower for transport if you plan the rail properly.

The costs people forget

City taxes charged on arrival, baggage fees, airport transfers at both ends, tips where they are expected, data, travel insurance, and the first day at home when nobody wants to cook. Together they routinely add fifteen per cent.

Where to spend and where to save

Spend on location, on the two or three experiences that are the reason for the trip, and on shorter travel legs. Save on room quality, on breakfast, and on souvenirs. That allocation produces a better trip at the same total cost.
