On arrival
City or tourist tax charged per person per night, often in cash. Airport transfers. Deposits for apartments and rental cars. Tips where they are structurally expected rather than optional.
During the trip
Dynamic currency conversion, ATM fees, mobile data, laundry, luggage storage on checkout day, and paid toilets, which are a genuine daily line item in parts of Europe.
The fix
Add fifteen per cent to whatever you calculated and treat that as the budget. If it does not fit, the trip is a day too long or a category too expensive, and it is better to know that now.
