Why second cities work
The best value in European travel is usually one train stop away from the obvious answer. Second cities have the museums, the food culture and the architecture without the pricing structure that comes from being on every list of ten places to see before you die.
They also tend to be more legible. You can understand a city of four hundred thousand in three days in a way you cannot understand Paris.
A shortlist worth considering
Porto instead of Lisbon if you want food and river views without the crowds. Bologna instead of Florence for the same region at a fraction of the pressure. Valencia instead of Barcelona for beach and city in one. Ghent instead of Bruges. Thessaloniki instead of Athens for food. Ljubljana as a base for the Julian Alps. Tallinn and Riga in the shoulder months.
How to judge a place you have not heard of
Check three things: is there a direct rail or flight connection, is the historic centre walkable, and does the city have a university. That last one matters more than it sounds, because student cities have affordable food, late transport and a year round rhythm rather than a tourist season.
The tradeoff to accept
Fewer English signs, fewer international restaurant options, and occasionally a museum that closes without warning. That is the price of the discount, and for most travelers it is a good deal.
