The minimum viable length
A useful rule is one day on the ground per hour of flight time, minimum. A twelve hour flight to Southeast Asia or Japan deserves at least twelve days. Below that, jet lag consumes a meaningful share of the trip and you spend the good days recovering from the travel days.
Structure the first 48 hours deliberately
Do not schedule anything expensive or unmissable on day one. Book accommodation with an early check in if possible, get outside in daylight on arrival afternoon, eat on local time, and go to bed at a local hour even if you are not tired.
Going east is harder than going west. Plan the eastbound direction with the softer schedule.
Fewer bases, longer stays
Long haul trips fail when they are structured like short haul ones. Three nights per city is a European pattern. At long haul distances, four to five nights per base with day trips outward is far more sustainable, and it reduces the number of internal flights, which is where most of the hidden fatigue lives.
Practical items that matter more at distance
Travel insurance with genuine medical coverage, a copy of your prescriptions, an eSIM arranged before departure, and at least one payment card that works internationally plus a backup stored separately. None of these are optional at twelve time zones from home.
