Three curves that rarely align
Every destination has three separate curves through the year: weather, crowds and price. Peak weather usually drags the other two with it, which is why the objectively best month is often the worst month to be there.
The useful skill is finding the weeks where the weather is still acceptable but the other two curves have dropped. In most of Europe that is late April to mid June and September to mid October. In Southeast Asia it is the shoulder either side of the monsoon. In the Caribbean it is the weeks before and after the winter high season.
What crowds actually cost you
Crowds do not just make photographs harder. They change the substance of the day: timed entries sell out, restaurants stop taking walk ins, trains require reservations, and the small local places become unavailable to anyone who did not book weeks ago.
Travelling two weeks outside peak often means the same city with a different character, and frequently at sixty per cent of the accommodation cost.
Local calendars matter more than global ones
Public holidays, school breaks and religious festivals move prices more sharply than any season. Golden Week in Japan, Ferragosto in Italy, Semana Santa in Spain and Latin America, and the domestic August exodus across southern Europe all fill hotels regardless of weather.
Check the destination's own calendar before booking. Sometimes a festival is exactly why you should go, but you should be going deliberately, not arriving into it by accident.
When peak season is the right answer
Skiing, diving in specific seasons, wildlife migrations, and anything driven by a natural event are worth the peak premium because the alternative is not seeing them at all. Pay the price, book early, and accept it.
