Book timed entry wherever it exists
Timed tickets are the single biggest quality of life improvement in modern travel. They convert a two hour queue into a five minute walk in. Book them the week you book flights for major sites.
Go first or last
The first hour after opening and the last two hours before closing are quiet almost everywhere. Late openings, common one evening a week, are frequently the best time of all and often discounted.
One major site per day
Attention is finite. Two hours in one museum produces more than four hours across three. Choose the collection you care about, see a third of it properly, and leave.
Check the closing day
Most European museums close one weekday, commonly Monday or Tuesday. Religious sites close for services. Ramadan, national holidays and local feast days all change hours. Verify on the official site the week before, not the month before.
