What hotels are good at

Short stays, arrival flexibility, staffed reception, luggage storage, daily housekeeping, and someone to ask when something goes wrong. For one to three nights, and for solo travelers arriving late, hotels are almost always the better choice.

What apartments are good at

Stays of four nights or more, families, groups, and anywhere the food shopping is part of the appeal. A kitchen removes the breakfast problem, a washing machine halves what you pack, and separate rooms matter enormously with children.

Check these before booking an apartment

Check in process and whether anyone will be there, which floor and whether there is a lift, whether the cleaning fee makes short stays uneconomic, and whether the building has any registration or local tax requirement on arrival.

A hybrid worth knowing

Aparthotels and serviced apartments combine a reception desk with a kitchen. In cities where short term rentals are heavily regulated, they are frequently the most practical option available.
