Budget Accommodation That Is Still Worth Staying In

Cheap and unpleasant are not the same thing. The difference is in what you prioritise.

Spend on location, save on everything else

A basic room in the right area beats a nicer room forty minutes out. Transport costs money and, more importantly, it costs the evening. The trip is happening outside the room either way.

The formats worth knowing

Guesthouses and pensions, family run two star hotels, hostels with private rooms, university residences in summer, and monastery or convent stays in parts of Italy and Spain. All of these routinely undercut chain hotels in the same district.

The non-negotiables

A clean bathroom, a bed you can sleep on, a door that locks properly, and heating or cooling appropriate to the season. Everything else, including breakfast, a view and a lobby, is optional and usually overpriced.

Where budget goes wrong

Shared bathrooms on a different floor, a top floor with no lift and heavy bags, no air conditioning in a Mediterranean summer, and check in windows that do not match your arrival time. Each of these is manageable if chosen deliberately and miserable if discovered on arrival.
