Find the centre of your own trip
Mark the three things you most want to do on a map. Your neighbourhood should sit inside or adjacent to that triangle. That is a more reliable guide than any list of best areas, because it is specific to your trip rather than to an average one.
The transport test
Two transport options within a ten minute walk gives you resilience. One option gives you a single point of failure. Check the connection to the airport or main station as well, because that leg happens with luggage and usually on a schedule.
The night test
Look at the street on a map at street level and ask whether there are bars directly below the property, whether the road is a main artery, and whether the area is commercial and therefore dead after seven. All three are real considerations, and the third catches people out most.
The one block rule
Prices drop sharply one street back from a main square or seafront, and the walk is thirty seconds. That single block is often the best value decision in the entire accommodation search.
