Family Route: One Base, Five Days

A single base route designed so nobody packs a suitcase more than twice.

Family walking along a coastal path together

Family trips get harder with every additional hotel. This route uses one base for the entire five days, with day trips that all return by late afternoon.

It is written for children roughly between four and twelve, but the structure holds for younger ones if you cut the inland day.

Suggested sequence

Day 1

Arrive and settle

Travel, shop for breakfast supplies, and find the nearest playground or beach access. Nothing else. Arrival days with children are already full.

Day 2

Beach and town

Morning at the water, afternoon rest at the apartment, short walk into town before dinner. This rhythm repeats well.

Day 3

Inland day trip

One castle, cave, farm or small town, no more than an hour each way. Leave early and be back by 3pm.

Day 4

Water day

Boat trip, water park or a quieter beach. Book morning slots, afternoons get hot and crowded.

Day 5

Repeat the best day

Genuinely. Ask the children which day they liked and do a shorter version of it before travelling home.

Shallow clear water at a family friendly beach
Shallow entry beaches change the quality of the whole trip.

Transportation options

  • One arrival transfer, prebooked, with car seats confirmed in writing
  • Rental car only if the day trips need it
  • Avoid connecting flights on the outbound leg where possible
Children playing outdoors in a park
One outdoor space near the accommodation is worth a lot.

Planning notes

  • Choose accommodation with a washing machine for stays over four nights.
  • Check the walking distance to a supermarket, not just to the beach.
  • Keep one full day with no plan at all, it will get used.
  • Bring known snacks, unfamiliar food plus tiredness is a bad combination.

What to know before going

  • Pack a small first aid kit including motion sickness tablets
  • Photograph passports and store them offline
  • Confirm cot or extra bed requests 48 hours before arrival
Apartment living space with a sofa and kitchen
Apartments beat hotel rooms once the trip is longer than three nights.

General trip structure

Keep one flexible half day per three days of travel. It absorbs delays, bad weather and the day somebody simply needs to sleep. A route without slack is not a plan, it is a schedule, and schedules break on holiday.
