Passport validity is the number one problem
Many countries require six months of validity beyond your departure date, and some require blank pages. Airlines enforce this at check in. Check the expiry date the moment you start planning, not the week before, because renewals take time.

Visas and travel authorisations
Requirements depend on your nationality, not your departure country. Electronic authorisation systems now apply in a growing number of places, and they are not the same thing as a visa. Check the destination's official government source, and check any country you transit through.
What to carry and how
A physical passport, a photograph of the data page stored offline on your phone, a separate copy in email, your insurance policy number, and a printed copy of your first night's accommodation. Immigration officers occasionally ask for the last of these.
Insurance and health documentation
Travel insurance with medical coverage and an emergency contact number saved offline. Any prescription medication in original packaging with a doctor's note if it is controlled. Vaccination records where required.
