Buffers that actually work

Two hours before a short haul flight, three before long haul, and add an hour for a major hub in peak season. The cost of arriving early is a coffee. The cost of arriving late is the trip.

Connections

Minimum connection times published by airports assume everything runs on time. For a self transfer on separate tickets, allow at least three hours and understand that no airline is responsible for the missed leg. On a single ticket, the airline must rebook you.

Security, efficiently

Liquids and electronics accessible at the top of the bag, no belt, no metal in pockets, and shoes that come off easily. Rules on liquids and laptops now differ between airports, so follow the signage rather than the habit.

When things go wrong

Get in the queue and call the airline simultaneously, because the phone line is often faster. Know your rights: in the EU and UK, delays and cancellations carry defined obligations for care and compensation. Keep receipts and keep the boarding passes.
