Set a daily driving ceiling
Three hours is comfortable, four is fine, five is the point at which the drive becomes the day. On winding coastal or mountain roads, halve those numbers, because mapping software is optimistic about anything with switchbacks.
Plan the stops, not just the route
The reason to drive is the ability to stop. Identify two or three possible stops per leg in advance, ideally a town for lunch and a viewpoint or a walk, so the drive has a shape rather than becoming a transfer.
Practical driving admin
Check whether you need an international driving permit, what the vehicle insurance excess is, and whether one way drop offs carry a fee. In Europe, verify low emission zone requirements for cities you plan to drive into, and check whether your route uses vignettes or tolls.
Parking decides your accommodation
In historic centres, parking is often the hardest part of the day. Either choose accommodation with confirmed parking, or stay outside the centre and walk in. Do not assume a space will be available near an old town gate.
